In the diagram, the shape consists of seven identical cubes with edge length 1. Entire faces of the cubes are attached to one another, as shown. What is the distance between PP and QQ?

Solution

Suppose that RR is the point at the bottom of the solid directly under QQ and SS is the back left bottom corner of the solid (unseen in the problem’s diagram).

Since QRQR is perpendicular to the bottom surface of the solid, then PRQ\triangle PRQ is right-angled at RR and so PQ2=PR2+RQ2PQ^2 = PR^2 + RQ^2.

We note also that PSR\triangle PSR is right-angled at SS, since the solid is made up of cubes.

Therefore, PR2=PS2+SR2PR^2 = PS^2 + SR^2.

This tells us that PQ2=PS2+SR2+RQ2PQ^2 = PS^2 + SR^2 + RQ^2.

Since the edge length of each cube in the diagram is 1, then PS=1PS=1, SR=4SR=4, and RQ=3RQ=3.

Therefore, PQ2=12+42+32=26PQ^2 = 1^2 + 4^2 + 3^2 = 26.

Since PQ>0PQ >0, then PQ=26PQ = \sqrt{26}.
