Suppose that N=3x+4y+5zN=3x+4y+5z, where xx equals 1 or 1-1, and yy equals 1 or 1-1, and zz equals 1 or 1-1. How many of the following statements are true?

NN can equal 0.
NN is always odd.
NN cannot equal 4.
NN is always even.

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution

When N=3x+4y+5zN = 3x+4y+5z with each of xx, yy and zz equal to either 1 or 1-1, there are 8 possible combinations of values for xx, yy and zz:
