Algebra Difficulty 2.5 Junior Find the answer

For which of the following values of xx is xx greater than x2x^{2}: x=2x=-2, x=- rac{1}{2}, x=0x=0, x= rac{1}{2}, x=2x=2?

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

When x=2x=-2, we get x2=4x^{2}=4. Here, x<x2x<x^{2}. When x=- rac{1}{2}, we get x^{2}= rac{1}{4}. Here, x<x2x<x^{2}. When x=0x=0, we get x2=0x^{2}=0. Here, x=x2x=x^{2}. When x= rac{1}{2}, we get x^{2}= rac{1}{4}. Here, x>x2x>x^{2}. When x=2x=2, we get x2=4x^{2}=4. Here, x<x2x<x^{2}. This means that x= rac{1}{2} is the only choice where x>x2x>x^{2}.
