In the diagram, the $5 \times 6$ grid is made out of thirty $1 \times 1$ squares. What is the total length of the six solid line segments shown?

We evaluate each of the five choices: $4^2 = 16 \qquad 4\times 2 = 8 \qquad 4-2 = 2 \qquad \dfrac{4}{2} = 2 \qquad 4 + 2 = 6$ Of these, the largest is $4^2 = 16$ .
