If x=14x = \frac{1}{4}, which of
the numbers xx, x-x, x2x^2, 3x3x, and x\sqrt{x} is the greatest?

Solution

If x=14x=\frac14, then x=14-x=-\frac14, x2=(14)2=116x^2=\left(\frac14\right)^2=\frac{1}{16},
3x=3(14)=343x=3\left(\frac14\right)=\frac34,
and x=14=12\sqrt{x}=\sqrt{\frac14}=\frac12.

The greatest of these numbers is 3x=343x=\frac34.
