Algebra Difficulty 2.6 Junior Find the answer Canada

Each of the variables aa,
bb, cc, dd, and ee represents a positive integer with the
properties that b+damp;gt;a+dc+eamp;gt;b+eb+damp;=ca+camp;=b+e\begin{align*} b+d &> a + d\\ c+e &> b+e\\ b+d&= c\\ a+c &= b+e\end{align*} Which of the variables has the
greatest value?

Pick one

Solution

Since b + d gt; a + d\text{b + d gt; a + d}, then
b gt; a\text{b gt; a}. This means that aa does not have the greatest value.

Since c + e gt; b + e\text{c + e gt; b + e}, then c gt; b\text{c gt; b}. This means that bb does not have the greatest value.

Since b+d=cb + d = c and each of bb, cc, dd
is positive, then d lt; c\text{d lt; c}, which
means that dd does not have the
greatest value.

Consider the last equation a+c=b+ea + c = b + e along with the fact that a lt; b lt; c\text{a lt; b lt; c}.

From this, we see that e=c+(ab)e = c + (a-b).

Since a lt; b\text{a lt; b}, then aba-b is negative and so e lt; c\text{e lt; c}.

This means that cc has the greatest
value.
