An athlete has just tackled a triathlon race. This competition is divided into three phases: the first is a swimming race, the second is cycling, and the third is running. Knowing that his average speed in the three legs was respectively 3 Km/h3\ \mathrm{Km}/\mathrm{h}, 30 Km/h30\ \mathrm{Km}/\mathrm{h} and 17 Km/h17\ \mathrm{Km}/\mathrm{h}, that the total length of the course is 30 Km30\ \mathrm{Km} and that the time he took to complete the race was one hour and 40 minutes, determine for how long he rode a bicycle.

The answer is (E)\mathbf{( E )}. One way to realize this consists in showing two different subdivisions of the course into three parts for which the conditions of the problem are satisfied. For example: the athlete could have swum for 727\frac{7}{27} of an hour, run for one hour and cycled for 1127\frac{11}{27} of\mathrm{of} an hour. In that case he would have competed for (727+1+1127)\left(\frac{7}{27}+1+\frac{11}{27}\right) hours =(1+23)=\left(1+\frac{2}{3}\right) hours =100=100 minutes and would have covered a distance equal to
(3727+17+301127)Km=30Km \left(3 \frac{7}{27}+17+30 \frac{11}{27}\right) \mathrm{Km}=30 \mathrm{Km}
