D is a point on side AB of △ABC, E is a point on CD and F is a point on CE. The areas of triangles AED, AEC, BFD and BFC are 6, 10, 17 and 7, respectively. What is the area of △BEF?

Solution
If two triangles have the same height, then the ratio of their areas is equal to the ratio of their bases. It follows that ECDE=106=53, so DCDE=3+53=83. Similarly, FCDF=717, so DCDF=17+717=2417. Therefore DCEF=DCDF−DE=2417−83=2417−9=248=31. It follows that △BEF=31△BDC=31(17+7)=8.
