Russia — Regional Round

Geometry Difficulty 5.4 AIME, harder Prove it Russia

Points AA, BB, CC lie on a circle. Line PBPB touches this circle at point BB. Drop the perpendiculars PA1PA_1 and PC1PC_1 from PP onto the lines ABAB and BCBC, respectively (points A1A_1 and C1C_1 belong to segments ABAB and BCBC, respectively). Prove that A1C1⊥ACA_1C_1 \perp AC.

Solution

CC1A1=180∘−∠A1C1B=∠A1PB=90∘−∠A1BP\angle CC_1A_1 = 180^\circ - \angle A_1C_1B = \angle A_1PB = 90^\circ - \angle A_1BP.

A1BP=∠ACB=12AB\angle A_1BP = \angle ACB = \frac{1}{2} AB.
