2014 lines are given in a plane, arranged in three groups of pairwise parallel lines. What is the greatest possible number of triangles formed by the lines (each side from such a triangle lies on one of the lines)?

Во рамнина, 2014 прави се распоредени во три групи заемно паралелни прави. Кој е најголемиот можен број на триаголници кои ги образуваат правите (секоја страна од таков триаголник лежи на некоја од правите).

Solutions — 2

Solution 1

Let abca \ge b \ge c be the numbers of the lines in the three groups for which the greatest possible number of triangles is attained. Then a+b+c=2014a+b+c=2014, and the greatest possible number of triangles is abcabc (when no three lines have a common point). We will show that ac+1a \le c+1. Let us suppose the opposite, i.e. a>c+1a>c+1. Then abc<b(ac+ac1)=b(a1)(c+1)abc < b(ac+a-c-1) = b(a-1)(c+1), which is contradictory to the choice of a,ba, b and cc. It cannot be that a=ca=c, because in that case a=b=c=20143a=b=c = \frac{2014}{3} is not an integer. In order for a,ba, b and cc to be integers, it must be that a=672a=672 and b=c=671b=c=671 and so the number of triangles is 6726712672 \cdot 671^2.

Solution 2

е. a>c+1a > c+1. Тогаш abc<b(a+cac1)=b(a1)(c+1)abc < b(a+c-a-c-1) = b(a-1)(c+1), што е противречно на изборот на a,ba, b и cc. Не може a=ca=c, бидејќи во тој случај a=b=c=20143a=b=c = \frac{2014}{3} не е цел број. За a,ba, b и cc да бидат цели мора a=672a=672 и b=c=671b=c=671 и бројот на триаголници е 6726712672 \cdot 671^2.
