Algebra Difficulty 1.9 Junior Find the answer

The three numbers 5,a,b5, a, b have an average (mean) of 33. What is the average of aa and bb?

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

Since 5,a,b5, a, b have an average of 33, then 5+a+b3=33\frac{5+a+b}{3}=33. Multiplying by 3, we obtain 5+a+b=3×33=995+a+b=3 \times 33=99, which means that a+b=94a+b=94. The average of aa and bb is thus equal to a+b2=942=47\frac{a+b}{2}=\frac{94}{2}=47.
