Algebra Difficulty 1.9 Junior Find the answer

If 3+x=53+x=5 and 3+y=5-3+y=5, what is the value of x+yx+y?

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

Since 3+x=53+x=5, then x=2x=2. Since 3+y=5-3+y=5, then y=8y=8. Thus, x+y=10x+y=10. Alternatively, we could have added the original two equations to obtain (3+x)+(3+y)=5+5(3+x)+(-3+y)=5+5 which simplifies to x+y=10x+y=10.
