Algebra Difficulty 1.9 Junior Find the answer

If xx is 20%20 \% of yy and xx is 50%50 \% of zz, then what percentage is zz of yy?

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

Since xx is 20%20 \% of yy, then x=20100y=15yx=\frac{20}{100} y=\frac{1}{5} y. Since xx is 50%50 \% of zz, then x=12zx=\frac{1}{2} z. Therefore, 15y=12z\frac{1}{5} y=\frac{1}{2} z which gives 25y=z\frac{2}{5} y=z. Thus, z=40100yz=\frac{40}{100} y and so zz is 40%40 \% of yy.
