Geometry Difficulty 4.8 AIME Find the answer

What fraction of the area of a regular hexagon of side length 1 is within distance 12\frac{1}{2} of at least one of the vertices?

Solution

The hexagon has area 6(3/4)(1)2=33/26(\sqrt{3} / 4)(1)^{2}=3 \sqrt{3} / 2. The region we want consists of six 120120^{\circ} arcs of circles of radius 1/21 / 2, which can be reassembled into two circles of radius 1/21 / 2. So its area is π/2\pi / 2, and the ratio of areas is π3/9\pi \sqrt{3} / 9.
