Geometry Difficulty 2.4 Junior Find the answer

A rectangular field has a length of 20 metres and a width of 5 metres. If its length is increased by 10 m, by how many square metres will its area be increased?

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

Since the field originally has length 20 m and width 5 m, then its area is 20×5=100 m220 \times 5=100 \mathrm{~m}^{2}. The new length of the field is 20+10=30 m20+10=30 \mathrm{~m}, so the new area is 30×5=150 m230 \times 5=150 \mathrm{~m}^{2}. The increase in area is 150100=50 m2150-100=50 \mathrm{~m}^{2}. (Alternatively, we could note that since the length increases by 10 m and the width stays constant at 5 m, then the increase in area is 10×5=50 m210 \times 5=50 \mathrm{~m}^{2}.)
