Square PQRS has an area of 900. M is the midpoint of PQ and N is the midpoint of PS. What is the area of triangle PMN?
A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.
Solution
Since square PQRS has an area of 900, then its side length is 900=30. Thus, PQ=PS=30. Since M and N are the midpoints of PQ and PS, respectively, then PN=PM=21(30)=15. Since PQRS is a square, then the angle at P is 90∘, so △PMN is right-angled. Therefore, the area of △PMN is 21(PM)(PN)=21(15)(15)=2225=112.5.
