A real number x satisfies 9x+3x=6. Compute the value of 161/x+41/x.
A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.
Solution
Setting y=3x in the given equation yields y2+y=6⟹y2+y−6=0⟹y=−3,2 Since y>0 we must have 3x=2⟹x=log3(2)⟹1/x=log2(3) This means that 161/x+41/x=(21/x)4+(21/x)2=34+32=90
