Geometry Difficulty 1.9 Junior Find the answer

A rectangular prism has a volume of 12 cm312 \mathrm{~cm}^{3}. A new prism is formed by doubling the length, doubling the width, and tripling the height of the original prism. What is the volume of this new prism?

Solution

Suppose that the original prism has length cm\ell \mathrm{cm}, width w cmw \mathrm{~cm}, and height h cmh \mathrm{~cm}. Since the volume of this prism is 12 cm312 \mathrm{~cm}^{3}, then wh=12\ell w h=12. The new prism has length 2cm2 \ell \mathrm{cm}, width 2w cm2 w \mathrm{~cm}, and height 3 cm. The volume of this prism, in cm3\mathrm{cm}^{3}, is (2l)×(2w)×(3h)=2×2×3×lwh=12×12=144(2 l) \times(2 w) \times(3 h)=2 \times 2 \times 3 \times l w h=12 \times 12=144.
