Geometry Difficulty 3.9 Find the answer Tenth Philippine Mathematical Olympiad · Philippines

The graphs of x2+y=12x^{2}+y=12 and x+y=12x+y=12 intersect at two points. What is the distance between these points?

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution:
Solving the following system of equations using the elimination method:
{x2+y=12x+y=12 \left\{\begin{array}{r} x^{2}+y=12 \\ x+y=12 \end{array}\right.
we get the ordered pairs (0,12)(0,12) and (1,11)(1,11). That is, the given graphs intersect at (0,12)(0,12) and (1,11)(1,11), whose distance is (01)2+(1211)2=2\sqrt{(0-1)^{2}+(12-11)^{2}}=\sqrt{2}.
