Algebra Difficulty 2.4 Junior Find the answer Canada

If xx is 20%20\% of yy and xx is 50%50\% of zz, then what percentage is zz of yy?

Pick one

Solution

Solution 1

Since xx is 20%20\% of yy, then $x =
20100y=15y$.\frac{20}{100}y = \frac{1}{5}y\$.

Since xx is 50%50\% of zz, then $x =
12z$.\frac{1}{2}z\$.

Therefore, $15y=12z\$\frac{1}{5}y = \frac{1}{2}zwhichgives which gives 25y\frac{2}{5}y = z$.

Thus, z=40100yz = \frac{40}{100}y and so
zz is 40% of yy.

Solution 2 Since xx is
20%20\% of yy, then $x =
0.2y$.

Since xx is 50%50\% of zz, then $x =
0.5z$.

Therefore, 0.2y=0.5z0.2y = 0.5z which gives
0.4y=z0.4y = z.

Thus, z=0.4yz = 0.4y and so zz is 40%40\% of yy.
