Algebra Difficulty 1.6 Junior Find the answer

Order the numbers 33, 52\frac{5}{2}, and 10\sqrt{10} from smallest to largest.

A number or a short expression. Spacing and $ signs are ignored.

Solution

Since 3=623 = \frac{6}{2} and 52<62\frac{5}{2} < \frac{6}{2}, then 52<3\frac{5}{2} < 3. Since 3=93 = \sqrt{9} and 9<10\sqrt{9} < \sqrt{10}, then 3<103 < \sqrt{10}. Thus, 52<3<10\frac{5}{2} < 3 < \sqrt{10}, and so the list of the three numbers in order from smallest to largest is 52,3,10\frac{5}{2}, 3, \sqrt{10}.
