The average of the two positive integers mm and nn is 5. What is the largest possible value for nn?

A number or a short expression. Fractions can be typed as 3/2, and spacing doesn't matter.

Solution

Since the average of mm and nn is 5, then m+n2=5\dfrac{m+n}{2} = 5 which means that m+n=10m+n=10.

In order for nn to be as large as possible, we need to make mm as small as possible.

Since mm and nn are positive integers, then the smallest possible value of mm is 1, which means that the largest possible value of nn is n=10m=101=9n = 10 - m = 10 - 1 = 9.
